Description

Simunye, 2001 – Simunye is a Zulu word meaning, “We are one.” The young men pictured are newly initiated Ndzundza Ndebele sons and grandsons, who are singing a praise chant to their female elders across the road. I run across the road to the men’s side and stand for a few moments behind the young men to get the perspective in this shot. I quickly go back to my ‘place’ on the women’s side of the road. This praise song/chant continues for an hour on the final day of the men’s three-month initiation season. These are new men who have “been to the mountain.”
